The Effect of Smoking on Subjective Obesity Assessment
Hong Seong-Hoon

Choi Jeong-Eun
Abstract
The effect of smoking on obesity is one of the main concerns for the smokers who consider stop smoking. This paper investigates how smoking influences people¡¯s body status by using a large social statistics survey data. we find that people have the notion that quitting smoking cause weight gain or obesity. Changes from smokers to nonsmokers raise
subjectively the probability of obese body status. Decreases in smoking amount raise the likelihood of obese body status. However, smokers with thin body status will participate in quitting smoking since they have worse health state than those with obese body status and thus they think quitting smoking can lead to normal body status and improve their health.
When smoking and alcohol drinking behavior is combined, it appears that former smoker-current alcohol drinker group is the most likely to be obese than other groups. A deviation from the status of currently smoking and never alcohol drinking increases the likelihood of obesity. For individuals who both smoke and drink alcohol, weight gain will be less likely when quitting smoking is accompanied with quitting alcohol drinking.
